Nafplion was the first
capital of Greece in modern times ,1829.It is the capital of the
prefecture of Argolis and the province of Nafplion. Nafplio is
situated on the Argolis Gulf in the northeast Peloponnese. Know
for its mild climate all year round.
Nafplion is the
perfect place for a walking tour. A good place to start the walk
is by climbing up to the castle of Palamidi, which was
the last major construction of the Venetian empire overseas. It overlooks the old town
and the whole of Nafplion from both sides. There are 857 stairs
from the base of the fortress to the top. If you have the courage
to walk up them it is well worth the effort as the views are
beautiful. In addition the castle is also the location of the
prison of Kolokotronis. One of the bastions, was used as the
prison cell of Theodoros Kolokotronis, a hero of the Greek
Revolution.
Going back down to Nafplion (by car if you are tired from the
climb up) we will visit the old town built on a peninsula
jutting into the gulf; this peninsula forms a naturally
protected bay. The first of the fortifications, on the
Akronafplia, was built by the
Byzantines. You can stroll through the old town with its
myriad of streets (without cars) and old buildings. Nafplio has
the reputation of being one of the most beautiful towns in
Greece. Here you can shop and have lunch at one of the
traditional taverns which are in abundance.Visit the church
where the first Prime Minister of Greece, Kapodistrias was
assassinated.
Nafplion is a port town so a stroll along the seafront is a
must. The seafront is lined with cafeterias where you can watch
sea traffic pass by. From here we can take a small boat to visit
the castle of Bourtzi which is located in the
middle of the harbor of Nafplion. The Venetians completed its
fortification in 1473 to protect the city from pirates and
invaders from the sea.
There are two
beaches on the other side of the peninsula where you can have a
swim if desired. All the
information & photos on this website is updated
continuously. I myself visit all sites frequently. You can view my portfolio
